Air_filter_replacement

Being from the midwest means Kansans are prepared for the crazy weather and for a snowstorm to occur in November or April. What some people might not know, though, is that prepping for a snowstorm means preparing your HVAC unit as well.

Unit preparation is much easier than it sounds, but will significantly benefit your entire home with just a few simple steps.

Replace the Air filters

Preparation steps include grabbing some air filters and changing them out every three to four months. Air filters can get clogged with dust, dirt, and hair which not only puts these pollutants back into the air but also clogs the system and prevents it from working efficiently.

If you have pets or young children, it may be a good idea to replace your filter more frequently. Animal hair and dust and dirt from young children playing can cause the filter to clog much quicker so it may need to be replaced every month to two months instead.

Check the Heat Pump

Although heat pumps are designed to handle winter weather, they can still get clogged; especially during a rough snowstorm. Before the severe weather even begins, double-check that your heat pump is clear so it can work properly to keep you warm.

During the storm, check to make sure snow and ice are not building upon the pump.

Furnace Maintenance

Lastly, regular furnace maintenance is necessary to keep your HVAC unit running all year. Furnaces can usually last from 15 to 20 years, but without routine maintenance, the lifespan goes down significantly.

By maintaining your system, it will last longer, your home will have better energy efficiency, and your heating bill won’t skyrocket. Here at Fahnestock, our NATE-certified technicians can fix your system in no time. We also have the option of Preventive Maintenance Plans to ensure year-round comfort and help you avoid unexpected issues.
